The Spine, Royal College of Physicians

The Spine is a £35m landmark, delivering one of the healthiest workplace environments in the world through its commitment to pioneering building methods, design innovation and the latest research and development in construction. As Information Manager for Morgan Sindall Construction, BIMBox delivered accurate, proactive and proficient information management that supported the project at every stage, ensuring that informed decisions could be made to deliver upon the strategic objectives a project of this scale and ambition.

BIMBox was appointed as Information Manager by Morgan Sindall Construction to provide critical oversight of inherited project information and also to provide further supervision for the production and delivery of critical project information (EIR, AIR, Project BEP and models).

The Information and BIM management throughout the lifecycle of The Spine has utilised market-leading processes and techniques to integrate the supply chain, project teams and varying disciplines through harnessing digital collaboration.

A clear digital approach led the project delivery at every stage, enhanced the involvement of the Client through superb visualisation processes and supported a culture of connectivity and excellence within the development. With digital construction techniques, changes were implemented much faster and smarter throughout the complex delivery, with potential issues captured sooner rather than later, reducing timely re-work.

A wealth of work was undertaken to promote best practice and boost capability across the supply chain in the use of BIM and digital construction. In doing so, not only was an exceptional award-winning building created, but invaluable development of BIM capacity and capability within the UK’s built environment that will support the responsibilities we all face in delivering more accurate data and intelligence to deliver upon societal challenges, such as reaching zero carbon and improving building quality.

NWRCA 2021 Winner

The building is one of only three in the UK designed to achieve Platinum WELL Standard, as well as winning the North West Regional Construction Award for Digital Construction in 2021.

“This submission demonstrated and evidenced the development of a digital delivery strategy, utilising Information Management and BIM, fully aligned to the requirements of PAS1192. It also demonstrates how to develop the capabilities of the supply chain and how to deliver a digital O&M manual. The project was delivered on time and budget and snag free. Through better adoption of digital construction methods, at an industry level, the project demonstrates how we could support the development of the National Digital Twin and help to solve the dilemmas of this decade, including sustainable zero carbon construction and the increasing demand from a growing population.”

75hrs of Technical Support

The digital construction work at The Spine included a total of 10 full days of technical support provided across the supply chain, enabling several organisations to learn more about areas such COBie data and carry forward valuable lessons into projects into the future.

BIMBox supported the team to achieve an intelligent data-rich 3D model, linking in with O&M and COBie data, that will enable the intelligent maintenance of the project, including spatial, descriptive and additional data requirements in areas such as technical specifications, asset tags, type properties and element descriptions, in-line with Uniclass 2015.

In total, throughout the delivery of The Spine, BIMBox provided 75 hours of technical support to the supply chain to help all partners understand the digital requirements.
